The Confirmation Preparation Program includes the following:

  • Attendance at five classes, which explore the Sacrament of Confirmation.
  • Classes are derived from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops teachings. Topics are Sacraments (specifically the Sacraments of Initiation), grace, the Holy Spirit, and what it means to be a Christian witness.
  • Classes will take place during the child’s regular religious education classes whether that is during Sunday morning SGFP Youth Ministry or at St. Christopher, St. Peter, and Our Lady of the Rosary Schools during the regular religion class.
  • Attendance at a retreat provided by St. Gabriel the Archangel Family of Parishes.
  • Attendance at a rehearsal for the Sacramental Mass. The sponsor is also asked to attend the rehearsal. If the sponsor cannot attend, a parent should take his/her place.
  • Candidates must have a sponsor, a spiritual companion, to stand up with him or her at the Confirmation Mass.
  • A sponsor must be a Confirmed practicing Catholic, in conformity with the norms, laws and principals of the Roman Catholic Church, at least 16 years old and not the candidate’s parent (Canon law 874).
  • Candidates must choose a confirmation name, which the Bishop will use at the anointing with Chrism.
  • One can choose their baptismal name (their first name) to show the connection between Baptism and Confirmation.
  • One may choose the name of a Saint or loved one with whom he or she connects, is inspired by and is a go-to intercessor.

When the Apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God,

they sent Peter and John to Samaria. When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers

there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit had

not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
